Correcting Posture

If you've started to notice that you're constantly hunched over, it's time for you to start looking at correcting posture steps that will get you back sitting straight the way your body was intended to be. The consequences of not correcting posture at this point could be severe, as the more time you let pass, the more ingrained these poor posture habits will become, which then only makes it that much more difficult to fix down the road.

Here are some steps to correct your posture quickly.

Watch Yourself In The Mirror

The first step to fixing any type of problem is making yourself more aware of it from the start. If you don't know the problem exists, it's going to be hard to take steps in the right direction to eliminate the problem and get yourself back on track to seeing results again.

Take the time every once in a while to notice how you're standing in the mirror. Using a side profile typically works best for this as then you can see if you are adopting any type of sway in your back or not. If you do notice that your back is not in complete alignment, take steps to fix that immediately.

Check Your Form In The Gym
Next up, you also need to spend time improving your posture in the gym because if you're spinal column is not in alignment when you have weights over your head, you're in for big problems.

If you don't understand what proper form is on the exercises you are doing, be sure you consult with a personal trainer for help. This is essential. Better to get help now than wind up injured and struggling later on.

Strengthen The Back Muscles

After you have assessed your posture in the gym on exercises such as the squat and the shoulder press (where people typically have the most problems), then you also should look into performing some back strengthening exercises as well. This will make it much easier to take action towards correcting posture in all the other hours of your day.

Increase Awareness

The fourth step to take in your quest for correcting posture is to increase your awareness all the time. Once you've gained a basic understanding of whether or not you're using a sway back position from above, the next step is to monitor your head, shoulder, back and stomach position all throughout the day.

As you become accustomed to these self-checks, you'll find that you need to make corrections to your posture much less often.

So, be sure you're focusing on these four steps as you go about correcting posture permanently. The first week will likely be the most challenging since it's when you're going to really be fighting your old habits, but after that, it's only going to get easier before one day you find yourself always using the right posture without even thinking about it.
