Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome, or PTLS for short, is a doctor-induced condition used to describe the side effects after a woman has had tubal ligation surgery done. One possible cause of the side effects of this syndrome is the decline of estrogen and the disruption of the blood passing through the fallopian tubes, uterus, and ovaries during the procedure.
PTLS has been a controversy for years stating whether or not the symptoms women have are real or just in their head. However women who have, or have had, PTLS will beg to differ.
Some symptoms include increased menstrual bleeding, increased cramping, hot or cold flashes, occasional arrhythmia (increased heart rate), mood swings, trouble sleeping through the night, tubal pregnancy, migraine headaches, loss of sex drive, dry or itch vagina, feelings of dread or nervousness, breast tenderness, headaches, changes in body or breath odor, osteoporosis, and the list goes on and on.
Since a lot of these symptoms can represent other medical conditions, it is important to talk with your doctor about what you are experiencing. You may be tested for thyroid disease or for a hormonal imbalance problem. Your doctor may also decide to put you back on birth control to help regulate heavy bleeding and painful cramps. But beware, as some birth control pills can cause you to have a tired feeling and can cause anemia in your post tubal ligation surgery status.
A lot of these symptoms are not discussed with your doctor prior to surgery and are not in the informed consent that you sign for the simple fact that most doctors believe Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome is nothing more than a myth (just like doctors used to think PMS was a myth) associated with getting older or stopping the use of birth control.
Because PTLS is considered to be an unacknowledged side effect of tubal ligation surgery, treatment is slim. What is known is if you are experiencing symptoms after you have had tubal ligation surgery, then do your research on the side effects. Once you have read thoroughly about the side effects, it may stop you from deciding to have the surgery done.
If you have already had tubal ligation surgery done, then there are still options available to you. You may still go back on birth control, or you may decide to have a hysterectomy done (if you want no more children). You may also decide to have a tubal reversal surgery done (if you decide that you do want children later on in life).
